Slovakia and its Literature is the first brief synthesis of the history of Slovak literature that has been ever published in English, focusing on literature since the period of Great Moravia till the present time. Its Internet version has been created by the Department of Informatics of LIC. It is based on the original book of the same title, written by a prominent literary historian and critic Vladimír Petrík (the author of Contemporary Slovak Literature which is also presented on Internet). It is dedicated mainly to all foreigners interested in Slovakia and its culture ( Slovak studies specialists, lecturers, translators, students, possible publishers of Slovak books...). The main aim of the publication is to provide basic information and knowledge on Slovak literature (a less-known national literature), its particular periods together with a cultural and social context in which it has been developing. The publication concentrates on primary values of Slovak literature and manners of their realization by particular authors and their works. A specific attention is paid also to Slovak history in the essay by a prominent Slovak historian Ľubomír Lipták. The new Ineternet version presents the publication both in Slovak and English.

Vladimír Petrík, PhD. (1929) is a prominent literary historian and critic. For over forty years he has been working at the Institute of Slovak Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. His interest concentrates mainly on the Slovak literature written between WWI and WWII. His numerous essays and critical papers were collected in the books Hľadanie prítomného času (The Search for the Present Time, 1970), Hodnoty a podnety (Values and Stimuli, 1980), Proces a tvorba (The Process and Production, 1990), and Desaťročie nádejí a pochybností (The Decade of Hope and Doubt, 2000). In 2002, he was awarded the Order of Ľudovít Štúr by the President of the Slovak Republic.
