The support of foreign translators and cooperation with translators' organisations abroad

These activities are the responsibility of
Slovenské centrum pre umelecký preklad (SCUP, The Slovak Centre for Literary Translation). Its main purpose is to provide a focus for literary translation activities in Slovakia and to complement the activities of other translation centres which have been established in Europe since the late 1970s (Germany, France, Great Britain, Greece, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden). SCUP was the first centre of its kind founded in Central and Eastern Europe.
The range of its activities comprises:
- Helping to raise the general awareness of, and the interest in, the art of literary translation and to improve the social status of the literary translator;
- Providing financial and material assistance and grants to translators of Slovak literature, literary scholars and critics as well as linguists interested in the Slovak language;
- Organising international conferences, seminars and lectures on translation as well as workshops for literary translators and scholars.
- Working as a constituent member of the established European network of translators´ institutions and to participate in the programme of the Charter of translators´ centres signed in Procida and complemented by the document of Budmerice. In 2000, these Centres formed Reseau Europeen des Centres Internationaux de Traducteurs Litteraires (RECIT).
