The Slovak language plays an important role in the professional life of professor Alexander Wöll, especially when it comes to comparative linguistics; he talks about how strongly the languages of Central Europe had influenced one another over the centuries. And he is optimistic that the "small" Slavic languages will remain interesting for next generations if the studies focus less on the national and more on the interdisciplinary aspects. Language skills will always be in demand – it does not look like machines will ever be able to translate sophisticated literary prose.
Im Berufsleben von Professor Alexander Wöll spielt das Slowakische vor allem aus komparatistischer Sicht eine bedeutende Rolle, er schildert, wie stark die Sprachen Mitteleuropas sich über Jahrhunderte gegenseitig beeinflusst haben. Und er ist ein großer Optimist, dass die „kleinen“ Slawinen weiterhin für den Nachwuchs interessant bleiben, wenn die Lehre weniger aufs Nationale bezogen und eher interdisziplinär gestaltet wird. Sprachkenntnisse sind immer gefragt – denn es ist nicht absehbar, dass Maschinen jemals in der Lage sein werden, anspruchsvolle Belletristik zu übersetzen.
