Curriculum vitae

Andrej Bán is a photographer and reporter for the Slovak daily Denník N. He has studied Economics and Journalism in Bratislava. Since 1987, he has been working for both Slovak and foreign media, primarily reporting from hard-hit parts of the world such as Kosovo, Israel, Georgia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Ukraine and Haiti. His focus is on the causes of conflicts and on the difficult situation of the victims of war and natural catastrophes. He looks at these people’s lives over a long period, following their struggles to return to normality. One of these experiences is documented in his collection of photographs and articles Žijeme horšie ako mŕtvi (We Live Worse than the Dead), about the Georgian refugees from Abkhazia. In 1999 during the war in Kosovo, he founded the organization People In Need that he then ran for thirteen years. His other publications include the photography books Iné Slovensko (The Other Slovakia, 2005) and Kosovo (2008), as well as the photo-documentary book Na juh od raja (South of Eden, 2016), covering the twenty-five countries he has reported from since 1991. Bán is also known for his passionate and consistent mapping of events in Slovakia. He co-authored several documentary films. His work has been exhibited extensively in Slovakia and abroad and it has won several awards.
