Smrek is considered one of the most prominent literary figures of Slovak literature of the 20th century. He first started writing and publishing in magazines when he was a high school student. His poetry is straight-forward and melodic and it expresses his love toward man as well as his optimistic take on life. The woman is often the center of his attention, as a symbol of youth, beauty and as holder of basic life values. In his writing, he aimed to evoke feelings of beauty and harmony while making sure that a poem has to be both emotional and musical.
