Jozef Cíger Hronský was born in Zvolen in 1896. He graduated from the Teacher's Institute in Levice and served as a soldier in the World War I. After returning from the Italian front he worked as a teacher for a decade. In 1932 he became the secretary and in 1940 the administrator of Matica Slovenská in Martin. After the end of the Second World War he left Slovakia, afraid of political persecution. Through Austria and Italy he went to Argentina where he wrote sporadically. Hronský died in Luján, Argentina in 1960.
