One of the representatives of the progressive Slovak literature, Hvorecký is a writer, journalist and translator. He has been active on the literary scene since the 1990’s when he emerged with the memorable collection of short stories Silný pocit čistoty (Strong Sense of Cleanliness, 1998). He also writes for children and translates from German. His books have been translated and published in ten languages. He works at the Goethe Institute in Bratislava.
