Rudo Sloboda’s prose writing has strong autobiographical features. The author often describes his own experiences and workings of his mind in his texts, focusing on the search for the meaning of life and on the isolation of the individual in an estranged society. Rozum (Reason, 1982) is one of the most read and most controversial novels in Slovak literature. It tells the story of a frustrated intellectual, lost in the maze of the communist society as well as in his own head. This is a recurring theme for Sloboda, present in many of his books. Read more
