Démon súhlasu / The Demon of Consent

Possibly Dominik Tatarka’s cardinal work, a reckoning with Stalinism in Czechoslovakia, this book is an account of slavish conformism, a posthumous scream of the socialist poet Bartolomej Boleráz, who dies in a helicopter crash together with a communist functionary. Published in 1963, the Demon of Consent (including the “fairytale” of the Ruler Stooge) was a seminal work of its time and remains just as important today, as is often the case with genuine literature. This is because now, just as in the past, the world is full of little stooges eager to consent to anything, protected by the herd and lacking principles and the ability to look ahead. A stooge is dangerous because he thinks he is not to blame for anything, lets the higher-ups think, talk and plan on his behalf, taking decisions and carrying responsibility for him… And this is the way to go to hell in a handcart.
