Na slepačích krídlach / The Best of All Worlds

A witty and also poetic narrative of a girl growing up, about the absurdity of life in a small town in Central Europe in the middle of the last century. Through the main character Jana, a child whose mother disappeared in prison, the author brings to life the social atmosphere of the 1950s, and also the fantasy time of childhood full of great feelings and deeds. Despite the tragic circumstances, the child longs to be a heroine and seeks her own method of survival. For her, the myth of the socialist builder is more attractive than her grandmother’s Catholicism or her father’s bourgeois world. The complications of life with her brother and the everyday threat of physical violence are counterbalanced by a natural mysticism and the enthusiasm of her grandfather, with his passion for inventions of all kinds. The author filters memories of childhood through an artless viewpoint; this  is framed in a sophisticated way by the life experience of a mature woman, who is not without a sense of humour or a gift for satire.
