As is usual with ballads, The Saddest Ballad in Orava is full of darkness and human tragedy. The fates of the Brechárs about which we learn through the character of the last Brechár, our contemporary Leopold, are filled with passion, hate, blood, even with boogymen and other bizarre occurences behind which we can sense the pulse of a life - past and present - that is real and truly ours: a Slovak life, a life from the region of Orava.
