Sloboda debuted with his novel in 1965. The protagonist Urban Chromý (Urban Lame) has left the Faculty of Arts, sold his books and collected debts from his friends. He told no one that he was leaving to work in the metalworks in Ostrava.
He searches for himself and the reality of life is interlaced with musings and dreams of Urban, the intellectual. After a day of hard work, he reads the Book of Isaiah, plays cards with the men and looks for a woman who would understand him. The place he condemned himself to soon enough depresses him so much that he starts to consider suicide.
