This brilliant essay-cum-novella offers critical, indeed at times heretical, insights into the soul of a Slovak (or, to be more precise, a Slovak reader and writer). It can also be read as a subversive account of Slovak national and cultural identity. Musings inspired by the permanently angry Austrian author Thomas Bernhard are intertwined with the story of a chance, but intense and tragic, infatuation of an ageing man with a much younger woman.
