Trestajúci zločin / The Punishing Crime

One of the most successful books of Ján Johanides. The novella The Punishing Crime (1995) is the tragic story of the law student Ondrej Ostarok who is unjustly sentenced to prison in 1949 together with his father, a fabric-store owner. The father dies in prison and the son - after an amnesty in 1956 - begins a new life. He cannot, however, shake the trauma of the prison hell.

The book has been translated into Hungarian and Arabic.

Viki Janoušková's adaptation of the novella for the Theatre Malá scéna STU has received Litfond's main prize for a dramatic text in 2017.
