Útek / The Escape

A young refugee from Africa is looking for his father and a place where the two can then find peace together. Essentially an adventure, the story also offers a glimpse into the world of people for whom wandering across continents is essential to their survival, especially now when movements of whole peoples have become such a common topic of discussion even here in Slovakia. The main protagonists travel the world and are received in different ways in different countries; only when people from different countries stand face-to-face, do they find out who they really are. What are these people with a home actually capable of and can they fight their own unwillingness to help? Can they be considerate and overcome the prejudice they feel towards someone from outside or will they simply reject anything foreign and that way justify their indifference to the fates of others? Seemingly distant and exotic countries reveal themselves to us; in these short tales of a little boy, Marek Vadas speaks with a language he has learnt from Black Africa, a place he keeps returning to either physically or in his thoughts. The book is simply and clearly written, without descriptions of violence or outpourings of emotion but with a powerful inner voice.
