Renowned Slovak poet and prose writer Katarína Kucbelová will introduce the German translation of her book Čepiec / The Bonnet (Slovart, 2019) on 23 April in the Austrian capital. The novel was nominated for the prestigious Angelus Central European Literature Award in 2023 and in 2020, it was one of the finalists of the Anasoft Litera Award.

The reading and discussion will take place on Tuesday, 23 April 2024 at 6:30 PM at the Institute of Slavonian Studies of the University of Vienna (Spitalgasse 2-4, Hof 3, Seminarraum 5), featuring Adam Bžoch as the moderator and Jaroslav Stahl as interpreter. The event is free and the German edition of the book will be sold on site.

Čepiec / The Bonnet came out in German as Die Haube – Impressionen aus einem Randgebiet in translation by Eva Profousová. It was published in 2023 by the Swiss publishing house Ink Press as part of their international-literature edition Tadoma.

The perceptive inter-generational encounter of two women with different life experiences offers a picture of present-day Slovakia. For two years, the author has been visiting the over 80 years old Iľka in the secluded mountain village Šumiac in central Slovakia, trying to learn how to sew a bonnet, an important part of the traditional women's clothing of the region. The compelling combination of literary reportage and documentary novel uncovers the unromanticized relationship between the past and the present and between personal identity and ethno-cultural stereotypes, as well as the complicated relationship the population's majority has to the Roma minority.
