Pavol Rankov’s short-stories collection On the Other Hand has been published in English in the British publishing house Terra Librorium in January 2024.
The book by the award-winning author, translated by Magdalena Mullek, represents the Slovak voice within the rich Central European orchestra. The English-language publication was supported by The Slovak Literary Centre.
As the title suggests, the stories in the collections have a dual character – half of them take place in the present and address themes of immigration, refugees, drug abuse or mental illness. The rest of the stories take place in faraway lands with palaces and kings and they reads like fairy tales in which people emerge on the other side of the globe, build cities for the virtuous and live alternative versions of their lives.
