Horúce leto 68 / Hot Summer '68

The summer of 1968: Tereza is among a group of Czechoslovak students who go on a study trip to Israel, organised by the writer Ladislav Mňačko, earning them the nickname “Mňačko’s children”. Šani, a lukewarm communist, is more in love with his Felícia, the Eastern bloc’s first sexy sports car, than with the party. Jozef, a Lutheran priest, is not allowed to take holy orders and chooses to study at the Academy of Performing Arts and become an actor, purely in order to avoid conscription. What connects a Jewish girl, a former communist and a Lutheran priest? It is the hot summer night of 20 to 21 August 1968, when the tanks of five “fraternal” armies roll into Czechoslovakia, triggering a string of tragic and bizarre situations, as our protagonists and their families wonder which country to flee to. We follow their escape from Vienna, London and Haifa to the US and eventually to Toronto and even beyond the Arctic Circle, where the Inuit live in a harsh and beautiful wilderness.  We also follow the lives of those who remain in Czechoslovakia to turn off the lights… A gripping, tragicomic tale based on real lives.
