This compelling combination of literary reportage and documentary novel is a personal account of the author. For two years, she has been returning to the secluded mountain village Šumiac in central Slovakia, trying to learn how to sew a bonnet, an important part of the traditional women's clothing of the region.
The Bonnet uncovers the unromanticized relationship between the past and the present and between personal identity and etno-cultural stereotypes as well as the complicated relationship the population's majority has to the Roma minority.
The perceptive inter-generational encounter of two women with different life experiences offers a picture of present-day Slovakia.
