Born 7 September 1940 in Martin into a teacher's family. He studied Slovak and History at Comenius University in Bratislava. After graduating in 1962 he worked as
a teacher for two years in Cejkov, before becoming an editor in Smena publishing house. In 1968 he took up an editorial post with the literary weekly Kultúrny život. When this journal ceased to exist he worked as an editor for the Slovenský spisovateľ publishing house (1970 -1971), then he returned to teaching, joining the staff of a secondary school in Bratislava (1972 - 1976). In the latter years of his life he worked as an editor of a magazine about film and theatre, Film a divadlo. Kužel died 18 December 1985 in Bratislava.
