This Room Is Impossible to Eat

Nicol Hochholczerová's striking debut prose begins as an expressive, poetic coming-of-age story and continues in the spirit of a stylized depiction of the unequal relationship between a twelve-year-old schoolgirl and a fifty-year-old art teacher. Feelings of misunderstanding, otherness and pathological first love brought to the forefront, are indirect testimony to the sexual abuse of the underage narrator. In her debut, the author drew from her own experience, which she needed to come to terms with. However, her main priority was the literary aesthetics of the book's narrative. The relationship between a grown man and a schoolgirl, presented over a period of six years, becomes an open secret in the local community and her family. The book reflects the society we live in. It has been shortlisted for the Anasoft Litera Award 2022 and  received Tatra Banka’s Young Artist Award in the same year. It has been translated into Hungarian, Serbian and Polish, with Czech, Bulgarian, Macedonian, English and French translations underway. In 2023 a theatre adaptation directed by Eduard Kudláč opened in the City Theatre in Žilina. A Czech stage version as well as a film adaptation are planned.
