Sliding Doors

In contemporary Slovak poetry we can hardly find such a serious, even ceremonial diction as in Dana Podraka's poetry. The poet approaches writing poems as a ritual: To weave the mat / on which my knees rest, she writes in her fourteenth collection. The characteristic cultivated pathos gives consistency and compactness to the author's work. Podracká believes in the mystical interconnection of things, events and phenomena: In every event, within it, there is something hidden / that is there continuously and it is holy. She knows that Death is not forever. Her poems are, in a way, little essays about someone or something that stirs consciousness, thoughts and memories within her. Sliding Doors was not written quickly or easily, and to look behind it requires slowing down to read it as well. Like the author's two previous collections, Kubus (2014) and Paternoster (2018), this collection is constructed from ten cycles of seven poems each, and so together they form a trinity or triptych.
