With his book Richard Pupala presents carefully chosen fragments or images that add up to a mosaic, evoking intense mental and emotional states. The author’s focus is on social themes: people on the margins of society, outsiders or children from broken families, and the way each of them comes to terms with their difficult circumstances. Pupala’s stories all feature characters who are each lonely in their own way. This is writing brimming with powerful emotions yet devoid of cheap sentimentality.
Book is nominated for the European Union Prize for Literature 2022.
